マタイ2：１−２、9-12 「全世界への喜びの知らせ」
序文）クリスマスの意義は、主イエス・キリスト様がこの世に生まれてくださったことにあります。それは「暗黒と死の陰にすわる者たちを照らし、われらの足を平和の道に導く」ためでした。「きょうダビデの町に、あなたがたのために、救い主がお生まれになりました。この方こそ主キリストです。」この大いなる喜びのニュースを、当時、心から迎え入れた二種類の方々がいた事を聖書は告げています。いわば主イエス・キリスト様に出会うための、二通りの導かれ方があるのです。 一つは、ベツレヘムの野原で羊を飼っていた羊飼たちが導かれた道です。二つ目は東方の博士たちの導かれた道です。どのように導かれとしても、ゴールがたいせつです。イエス・キリストに出会って礼拝をささげたからです。
Ⅰ 羊飼いたちと博士たちの社会生活の対照
二種類の人々は、社会生活の上で、驚くほど対照的な生活を送っていた方々でした。それにも関わらず、共通の大切な経験をしました。「羊飼いたちは、イスラエルにおいて、土地労働のすべての職業の内で最も古いのは牧畜業でした。また､羊飼いあるいは牛飼いでした。農耕者として定着するはるか以前から彼らは天幕に住み､家畜を牧場から牧場に追いながら､あちらこちら放浪しました。キリスト時代でもなお非常に重要な職業でした。羊の世話は容易で平和な職業であったと想像されます。一ダースぐらいの羊たちは子ども一人にゆだねることができました。それが千頭、一万頭ぐらいになると、大人の熟練した男子にのみゆだねられました。だからといって羊飼いは純粋な信頼を受けていたのではありませんでした。正直なユダヤ人が決して子どもに教えない「泥棒商売」の中に、羊飼いが含まれるという言葉さえ流布していました。実際には、この職業は決して楽な働きではありませんでした。羊飼いは病気の羊や傷ついた羊の看護をし、妊娠している牝羊と生まれた小羊の世話をし、家畜に課せられる十分の一税金のために、狭い門を通らせ10頭目ごとに祭司のために選り分ける働きもありました。羊と羊飼いは寝起きをともにしました。それで昼は日照りに苦しみ､夜は寒さにくるしみました。」（イエス時代の日常生活二巻123頁）野宿で夜番をしていたと聖書にあるとおりです。一般的に貧しい人々だったのです。三Ｋの仕事でした。身分としては、最下層民の扱いを受けていたのです。 他方、東方から来た博士たちは、異邦人でした。彼らの属する社会では、尊敬を受けていただろうし、イエス様にささげた贈り物は高価な最高級品でしたから金持ちだったと考えられます。黄金をささげた。黄金は聖書の中に最も多く出てくる金属であり、当時、産出量も少なく、産出地はオフィル、シェバ、アラビアであった。黄金は富と栄誉の象徴であり金よりも尊い永遠の宝の表現に用いられ、王者の栄誉を示した。アブラハムをはじめ族長が貯めていたし、ソロモンの神殿、宮殿の建築には多量の金を使用した。乳香をささげた。乳香は、かんらん科の植物の樹脂で、幹を傷つけると乳白色の樹脂がにじみでてくる。その形が乳頭に似ているところから、乳香の名がつけられた。種類は色々ある。古代エジプトでは王様だけしか使うことが許されなかった聖なるものでした。このエジプトの習慣が、出エジプトと共にユダヤ人に伝わり、神にささげる薫香として用いられるようになったのです。没薬をささげた。「没薬はかんらん科に属する植物の樹脂からとられる。古代エジプトではミイラつくりのためになくてならないものであった。そしてミイラ作りには乳香は除外された。」出エジプト30：23-25「あなたは、最上の香料を取れ。液体の没薬五百シェケル、かおりの強い肉桂をその半分-二百五十シェケル-、におい菖蒲二百五十シェケル、桂枝を聖所のシェケルで五百シェケル、オリーブ油一ヒン。あなたはこれらをもって聖なるそそぎの油を、調合法にしたがって、混ぜ合わせの香油を作る。これが聖なるそそぎの油となる。」没薬は強い殺菌力と芳香を有し、これを他の香料と一緒に混ぜてオリーブ油に溶かした香油や動物脂に溶かした香膏が古代エジプト時代からソロモン時代を経て、祭司や貴婦人たちの化粧品や皮膚薬として用いた。これは死体にも塗られた。
東方の博士たちは､これら贈り物を用意することができました。それらを携えて､遠路はるばる星に導かれてきました。異邦人の代表としてメシヤ幼子イエスを王として聖なる方として、しかし、わたしたちのために死に葬られる方として認め、信仰をあらわしたのです。
主は最も貧しい者たちにも、富んでいる者たちにも、救おうとする人々は､誰にでも、尊い救いを届けてくださるのです。私たちにももちろんです。
Ⅱ 共通の経験 救い主に出会って礼拝した。
１ 羊飼いたちは、イエス・キリストの誕生のニュースを誰よりも最初に天使から聞きました。彼らがマリヤにしたあかしにより、導かれた様子がわかります。天使から救い主の意味も聞いたのです。主イエス・キリストの誕生した場所に一番近くいた人たちと言えるでしょう。会うための準備はなしに､メッセージを受けると直ちに飛んでいきました。聞いてすぐに信じることができる人たちの代表です。彼らの第一のあかし。 救(すく)い主(ぬし)誕生(たんじょう)が出現(しゅつげん)した天使(てんし)たちによって知(し)らされたこと。その様子(ようす)は８〜９節(せつ)に記録(きろく)されています。彼(かれ)らがベツレヘムの野原(のはら)で羊(ひつじ)の番(ばん)を夜(よる)にしていたときに、突然(とつぜん)主(しゅ)の栄光(えいこう)が彼(かれ)らを照(て)らし、主(しゅ)の使(つか)いがあらわれたのでした。大変(たいへん)なおどろきでした。怖(こわ)がったのでした。御使(みつか)いが伝えたメッセージがありました。10〜12節 それは民(たみ)全体(ぜんたい)への喜(よろこ)びのメッセージでした。ダビデの町(まち)で救(すく)い主(ぬし)がお生(う)まれになった。平和(へいわ)の君(きみ)だというのです。この方(かた)が主(しゅ)キリスト（メシア）です．神(かみ)がすべての民(たみ)に例外(れいがい)なしに与(あた)えようと大(おお)きな喜(よろこ)びを賜(たまわ)りました。人間(にんげん)が作(つく)り出(だ)す一時的(いちじてき)よろこびではなくて、神(かみ)からくる永遠(えいえん)の喜(よろこ)びです。救(すく)い主(ぬし)イエスに土台(どだい)がある喜(よろこ)びです。
第二のあかしは、そのうまれた方が救い主である。証拠(しょうこ)となるしるしは「飼(か)い葉(ば)桶(おけ)に寝(ね)ておられるみどりご」というのです。まさに彼らは「飼(か)い葉(ば)桶(おけ)に寝(ね)ておられるみどりご」に会ったのでした。第三のあかしは、 天使(てんし)たちは喜(よろこ)びのメッセージを伝(つた)えた後(あと)に、多(おお)くの天(てん)の軍勢(ぐんぜい)が現(あらわ)れて大讃美(だいさんび)を歌(うた)いました。その内容です。「いと高(たか)き所(ところ)に、栄光(えいこう)が、神(かみ)にあるように。地(ち)の上(うえ)に平和(へいわ)が、御心(みこころ)にかなう人々(ひとびと)にあるように。」喜(よろこ)びのメッセージを語(かた)ると自然(しぜん)と喜(よろこ)びの讃美(さんび)が心(こころ)にあふれます。神(かみ)があなたに喜(よろこ)びを与(あた)えられたときに、あなたは自然(しぜん)に讃美(さんび)を口(くち)ずさんだことでしょう。神(かみ)に天(てん)で仕(つか)えている天使(てんし)たちは、救(すく)い主(ぬし)の地上(ちじょう)への誕生(たんじょう)の目的(もくてき)を知(し)っていました。それでこの出来事(できごと)をどれほど待(ま)ち望(のぞ)んでいたことでしょう．それがついに実行(じっこう)に移(うつ)されたのです。栄光(えいこう)神(かみ)にあるように。讃美(さんび)をうたい、その目的(もくてき)が実施(じっし)されたときに、「地上(ちじょう)には御心(みこころ)のかなう人々(ひとびと)に平和(へいわ)があるように」と歌(うた)いました。平和(へいわ)の君(きみ)の誕生(たんじょう)を彼(かれ)ら天使(てんし)たちは知(し)っていました。
それはイエス様(さま)が生(う)まれるBC740年まえに、預言者(よげんしゃ)イザヤをとおして、すでに知(し)らされていました。「ひとりのみどりごが私(わたし)たちのために生(う)まれる。ひとりの男(おとこ)の子(こ)が、私(わたし)たちに与(あた)えられる。主権(しゅけん)はその肩(かた)にあり、その名(な)は不思議(ふしぎ)な助言者(じょげんしゃ)、力(ちから)ある神(かみ)、永遠(えいえん)の父(ちち)、平和(へいわ)の君(きみ)」と呼(よ)ばれる。その主権(しゅけん)は増(ま)し加(くわ)わり、その平和(へいわ)は限(かぎ)りなく、ダビデの王座(おうざ)に着(つ)いて、その王国(おうこく)を治(おさ)め、さばきと正義(せいぎ)によってこれを堅(かた)く立(た)て、これをささえる」(イザヤ9:6)。メシアはダビデの王座(おうざ)に着(つ)く。次(つぎ)に、平和(へいわ)の君(きみ)は、安全(あんぜん)をもたらす。主(しゅ)は偉大(いだい)な羊飼(ひつじか)いである。羊(ひつじ)たちの安全(あんぜん)のために互(たが)いにかみ合(あ)ったり、滅(ほろ)ぼしたり、敵(てき)が起(お)こって妨害(ぼうがい)を加(くわ)えたりすることを許(ゆる)されない。人々(ひとびと)は、悪(あく)から救出(きゅうしゅつ)され、また悪(あく)への恐(おそ)れからも解放(かいほう)される。「主(しゅ)を知(し)る事(こと)が海(うみ)をおおう水(みず)のように地(ち)を満(み)たすからである。」（９節(せつ)）主(しゅ)を恐(おそ)れることの喜(よろこ)びと，主(しゅ)のさばき，統治(とうち)への信頼(しんらい)と賛美(さんび)が全地(ぜんち)に満(み)ちあふれている。イエス様(さま)を信じた人々(ひとびと)には平和(へいわ)が与(あた)えられます。
２ 異邦人であった博士たちは、星に導かれて、幼子の所につきました。
博士たちには、天使の歌ではなく、彼らの文化、教育、天文学、趣味、職業などを用いて､効果的に知らされました。詩的な理解に早い羊飼いたちには、ある意味で彼らの感性をおもちいになりました。博士たちには、研究に余念のない状況に当てはめて、星を用いられました。理性的であったといえます。博士たちは、遠くに住んでいましたので、イエス・キリストにであうまで、たくさんの時間がかかりました。しかしそれだけに準備をよく整えて、長旅をして､ついに主イエス・キリストに出会い礼拝しました。
新しい王様が生まれたと理解した彼らは準備してきた黄金をささげました。王様だけが用いることのできた乳香もささげました。幼子イエスに没薬が献げられたことは、彼の死と葬りを示しています。永遠の王であり、聖い罪のない方が、罪の結果である死を経験し、葬られることが表されています。罪のない方が、わたしたちの罪の身代わりとなって、罪を負い十字架に死に贖いのわざを成し遂げる。そのようにしてメシヤであることを全うする。このことが献げ物により示されたのです。博士たちは、預言書を読んで調べていたとわかります。誕生の地がベツレヘムであると預言者ミカによって分かったと言っているからです。
Ⅲ 私たちは、どのようにして導かれるでしょうか。羊飼いタイプでしょうか。博士タイプでしょうか。どちらにしても大切なことは、救い主イエス・キリストに出会って､礼拝することがゴールです。それでこそ真のクリスマスなのです。
結(むす)び）メシアの誕生(たんじょう)を祝(いわ)う天使(てんし)の大(だい)賛美(さんび)、羊飼(ひつじか)いたちの喜(よろこ)び、そのあかし、それを聞(き)いた。その上(うえ)で、私(わたし)たちは平和(へいわ)の君(きみ)の主(しゅ)の再臨(さいりん)の希望(きぼう)をもっている。素晴(すば)らしい平和(へいわ)の君(きみ)からいただいた神(かみ)との平和(へいわ)をしっかりと心(こころ)に抱(だ)いて2015年(ねん)へと歩(あゆ)みをすすめ、最終的(さいしゅうてき)な救(すく)いの完成(かんせい)を祈(いの)りつづけましょう。
2014년 12월 21일 크리스마스 예배 누가복음2:8-16 마태복음 2:1-2, 9-12 「전세계를 향한 기쁨의 소식」
서문) 크리스마스의 의의는 주 예수 그리스도께서 이 세상에 태어나 주신것에 있습니다. 그것은 「어두움과 죽음의 그늘에 앉은 자에게 비취고 우리 발을 평강의 길로 인도」하시기 위한 것이었습니다. 「오늘날 다윗의 동네에 너희를 위하여 구주가 나셨으니 곧 그리스도 주시니라」이 위대한 기쁨의 소식을 당시, 두 종류의 사람들이 마음속 깊이 받아들인 것을 성경은 고백하고 있습니다. 말하자면, 주 예수 그리스도를 만나기 위해서는 두 종류의 길이 있다는 것입니다. 두번째는 동방박사들이 인도된 길입니다. 어떠한 방법으로 인도되어도 마지막 골인은 중요합니다. 예수 그리스도를 만나 예배드렸기 때문입니다.
Ⅰ 양치기들과 박사들의 사회생활의 대조
두 종류의 사람들은 사회생활면에 있어서 놀랄정도로 대조적인 생활을 하던 사람들입니다. 「토지노동의 모든 직업중 가장 오래된 것은 목축업입니다. 양치기, 또는 소몰이 입니다. 인간이 농경자로 정착하기 훨씬전부터 그들은 천막에 살면서, 가축을 목장에서 목장으로 이동시키며 이곳저곳을 방랑하며 살았습니다. 그리스도 시대에도 양치기는 중요한 직업이었습니다. 양을 돌보는 것은 쉽고 평화스런 직업으로 상상되곤 합니다. 당시, 자녀 한명에게 12마리 정도의 양을 맡겼습니다. 그것이 천마리, 일만마리 정도가 되면, 숙련된 남자성인에게 맡겼습니다. 그렇다고 해서, 양치기가 순수한 신뢰를 얻고 있었다는 것은 아니었습니다. 정직한 유대인이 결코 자녀에게는 가르치지않는 「도둑상매」중에 양치기가 포함되어 있다라는 말까지 퍼져있을 정도입니다. 실제로 이 직업은 결코 편한 일이 아니었습니다. 양치기는 병든 양이나 상처입은 양을 간호하며, 새끼를 밴 암양과, 갓태어난 어린양을 돌보며, 가축에게 매겨진 십분의 일의 세금을 치루기 위해, 좁은 문을 지나 각 10번째가 되는 양을 골라내는 일도 하고 있었습니다. 양과 양치기는 취침도 함께 했습니다. 때문에 낮에는 강한 햇빛에, 저녁엔 추위로 어려운 생활을 보냈습니다.」(예수님 시대의 일상생활 2권 123장) 노숙으로 밤을 지키고 있다고 성경에 쓰여있는 대로 입니다. 일반적으로 가난한 사람들이었습니다. 3K 직업이었습니다. 신분으로는 최하층의 취급을 받았습니다.
한편, 동방에서 온 박사들은 이방인이었습니다. 그들이 속한 사회에서는 존경을 받았을 것이며, 예수님께 바친 선물은 최고급품이었으므로, 부한자였다고 생각할 수 있습니다. 동방박사는 황금을 바쳤습니다. 황금은 성경에서 가장 많이 나오고 있는 금속으로, 당시 생산양도 적었으며, 출산지는 오필, 셰바, 아라비아였습니다. 황금은 부와 영예의 상징으로 돈보다 귀한 영원의 보물로 표현되고 있으며, 왕좌의 영예를 나타냅니다. 아브라함은 물론 족장들은 금을 비축했으며, 솔로몬 성전, 궁전의 건축물에는 다량의 금을 사용했습니다. 다음으로 동방박사들이 바친것은 유황이었습니다. 유황은 감람과 식물의 기름으로써, 줄기에 상처를 입혀 유백색의 기름이 나오게 됩니다. 이 모양이 유두를 닮아, 유황이라 이름 붙였습니다. 여러가지 종류가 있습니다. 고대 이집트에서는 왕만 사용할 수 있는 성스러운 것이었습니다. 이 이집트의 습관은 출애굽과 함께 유대인에게 전해져, 하나님께 바치는 훈현으로 사용되게 되었습니다. 다음으로 동방박사들은 몰약을 바쳤습니다. 「몰약은 감람과에 속한 식물의 기름에서 취한다. 고대 이집트에서는 미이라를 만들기위해 없어서는 안되는 것이었다. 그리고 미이라를 만드는데 유황은 제외되었다.」 출애굽기30:23-25 「너는 상등 향품을 취하되 액체 몰약 오백 세겔과 그 반수의 향기로운 육계 이백오십 세겔과 향기로운 창포 이백오십 세겔과 계피 오백 세겔을 성소의 세겔대로 하고 감람 기름 한 힌을 취하여 그것으로 거룩한 관유를 만들되 향을 제조하는 법대로 향기름을 만들찌니 그것이 거룩한 관유가 될찌라」 몰약은 강한 살균작용과 향기를 가지고 있어서 이것을 다른 향료와 섞어, 올리브 기름으로 녹인 향유나 동물성 기름에 녹인 향유가 고대 이집트 시대에서 솔로몬 시대를 거쳐, 제사장이나 귀부인들의 화장품이나 피부약으로 사용되기도 하였다. 이것은 시체에도 발랐다.
동방박사들은 이 선물을 준비할 수 있었습니다. 이것들을 준비해, 먼길을 떠나, 별의 인도를 받았습니다. 이방인의 대표로써 메시아 어린 예수를 왕으로 성스런 분으로, 그것도 우리들을 위해 죽어주실 분으로 인정하고 믿음을 나태낸 것이었습니다.
예수님은 가장 가난한 자들에게도, 부한 자들에게도, 구원하시려는 사람 누구라도, 숭고한 구원을 전해주시는 것입니다. 물론 우리들에게도 말입니다.
Ⅱ 공통의 경험 구원의 주님을 만나 예배했다.
１ 양치기들은 예수 그리스도의 탄생의 소식을 누구보다도 빨리 천사로부터 들었습니다. 그들이 마리아에게 한 고백을 통해 인도된 경위를 알 수 있습니다. 구세주의 의미도 천사에게 들었습니다. 구세주를 만날 준비도 하지 못한 채, 메세지를 듣고 바로 달려갔습니다. 말씀을 듣고 바로 믿는 사람들의 대표입니다. 그들의 첫번째 간증. 구세주의 탄생을 천사들로부터 듣게된 것. 그 경위는 8-9절에 기록되어 있습니다. 그들이 베들레헴 초원에서 양을 지키던 밤, 갑자기 주의 영광이 그들을 비취고, 주의 천사가 나타났습니다. 그들은 대단히 놀랐습니다. 두려워했던 것입니다. 천사가 전한 말이 있었습니다. 10-12절 그것은 민족 전체를 향한 기쁨의 소식이었습니다. 다윗의 동네에 구세주가 나셨음이라. 평화의 왕이시라. 이분이야말로 주 그리스도(메시아)입니다. 하나님께서 모든 백성에게 예외없이 주시려 위대한 기쁨을 보내셨습니다. 인간이 만들어 낸 일시적인 기쁨이 아니라, 하나님으로부터 온 영원한 기쁨입니다. 구세주 예수가 토대가 되신 기쁨입니다.
두번째 간증은, 이 나신분이 구세주인 것입니다. 증거가 되는 것은 「강보에 싸여 구유에 누인 아기」입니다. 그들은 정말로「강보에 싸여 구유에 누인 아기」를 만났습니다. 세번째 간증은, 천사들이 기쁨의 소식을 전한 후, 홀연히 허다한 천군이 그 천사와 함께 있어 하나님을 찬양했습니다. 그 내용은 「지극히 높은 곳에서는 하나님께 영광이요 땅에서는 기뻐하심을 입은 사람들 중에 평화로다」입니다. 기쁨의 소식을 전한 후 자연히 기쁨의 찬양이 마음으로부터 흘러나왔습니다. 하나님께서 여러분에게 기쁨을 주셨을 때, 우리는 자연히 찬양을 부르게 될 것입니다. 하나님을 섬기는 하늘의 천사들은 구세주가 지상에 탄생하신 이유를 알고 있었습니다. 때문에 이 탄생을 얼마나 기다리고 있었을까요? 그것이 이제야 실행된 것입니다. 영광의 하나님께. 찬양을 드리고, 그 목적이 실행되었을 때「땅에서는 기뻐하심을 입은 사람들 중에 평화로다」라고 노래했습니다. 평화의 왕의 탄생을 그들 천사들은 알고 있었습니다.
이것은 예수님께서 태어나신 BC740년 전에 선지자 이사야를 통해 이미 예언된 것이었습니다. 「이는 한 아기가 우리에게 났고 한 아들을 우리에게 주신바 되었는데 그 어깨에는 정사를 메었고 그 이름은 기묘자라, 모사라, 전능하신 하나님이라, 영존하시는 아버지라, 평강의 왕이라 할 것임이라」 (이사야9:6) 메시아는 다윗의 위에 앉으십니다. 다음으로 평강의 왕은 안전하게 하십니다. 주는 위대한 양치기이기도 합니다. 양들의 안전을 위해 서로가 물며, 멸망시키고, 적이 해를 입히는 것을 용서하지 않습니다. 사람들은 악으로부터 구출되어, 또한 악에대한 두려움에서 해방됩니다. 「물이 바다를 덮음같이 여호와를 아는 지식이 세상에 충만할 것임이라」 (9절) 하나님을 두려워하는 것에 대한 기쁨과 주의 심판, 통치하시는 것에대한 신뢰와 찬미가 온땅에 넘치고 있습니다. 예수님을 믿은 사람들은 평화를 얻게됩니다.
２ 이방이었던 박사들은 별의 인도로 아기의 있는 곳으로 왔습니다.
박사들에게는 천사의 노래가 아닌, 그들의 문화, 교육, 천문학, 취미, 직업등을 통해 효과적으로 알려졌습니다. 시적 이해가 빠른 양치기들의 감성을 쓰셨습니다. 박사들에게는 연구에 여념이 없는 상황에 마추어, 별을 사용하셨습니다. 이성적이었다고 말할 수 있습니다. 박사들은, 먼곳에 살고 있었으므로 예수 그리스도를 만날때까지, 많은 시간이 걸렸습니다. 그러나 그만큼 충분한 준비를 하고, 결국 주 예수 그리스도를 만나 예배드렸습니다.
새로운 왕이 태어나셨음을 이해한 그들은 준비해온 황금을 드렸습니다. 왕만이 사용할 수 있는 유황을 드렸습니다. 어린 예수에게 몰약을 드린것은, 그분의 죽음과 장사를 의미하고 있습니다. 영원의 왕이며, 성스런 죄가 없으신 분이 죄의 결과인 죽음을 경험하고, 장사되는 것이 나타나고 있습니다. 죄가 없는 분이 우리들의 죄를 대신하여, 죄를 지고, 십자가에서 죽음의 대속의 업적을 성취하셨습니다. 이렇게함으로써 메시야의 임무를 완수하셨습니다. 이일이 바쳐진 물건으로 증거된 것입니다. 박사들은 예언서를 읽고 연구했음을 알수 있습니다. 탄생하실 곳이 베들레헴임을 선지자 미가를 통해 알았다고 말하고 있기때문입니다.
Ⅲ 우리들은 어떻게해서 인도되었습니까? 양치기 타입입니까? 박사타입입니까? 어느쪽에도 중요한 것은 구세주 예수 그리스도를 만나 예배하는 것이 마지막 골입니다. 그럼으로 참된 크리스마스가 되는 것입니다.
맺음) 우리는 메시아의 탄생을 기뻐하는 천사의 찬양, 양치기들의 기쁨, 고백을 들었습니다. 더욱이 우리들은 평강의 왕이 재림하실것에 대한 소망을 가지고 있습니다. 놀라운 평강의 왕으로부터 받은 하나님과의 평화를 마음속 분명하게 가지고 2015년을 향해 걸어가며, 최종적으로 구원의 완성을 기도해 나갑시다.

Introduction!
The importance of the Christmas is in the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ to this world.!
It is “to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace”. “Today in the town of David a saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” The Bible says there were two kinds of people who welcomed this news of great joy in their heart. In other words, there are two ways to be led to meet the Lord Jesus Christ. One way is the way that the shepherds in the field of Bethlehem were led. The another is the way that the wise men from the east were led. However the way they were led, it is the goal that is important. They met and w!orshiped Jesus Christ.!
I!The comparison between the social life of the shepherds and wise men
The social life styles of these two types of people were remarkably different. Despite the fact, they experienced a common and important event. ‘Shepherd: In Israel, stock-farming is the oldest jobs amongst all the land labours. It was either sheep farming or cattle breeding. Long before they settled as agricultural farmers, they had lived in a tent, wandering from one farm to the other, chasing after the cattle. It was still an important job at the time of Jesus. We might think it would be a relatively easy and peaceful job to look after sheep. A child could mind a dozen sheep or so. When it becomes a herd of a few thousands or 10 thousands, only skilled adult men could take up the job. However they were not necessarily truly trusted. It was widely thought that shepherd was included in the “stealing business” which honest Israelites would not teach their children about. In reality, shepherd was not an easy job. The shepherds had to take care of the sick and injured sheep, look after the pregnant female sheep and their babies. They had to take out every 10th sheep that goes through a narrow gate for the priest and take one tenth away as a tax for cattle. They eat and sleep together. Therefore they suffer heat during the day and cold in the night.’ (Daily Life of Jesus’ Time number 2 p.123) As it is written in the Bible, they were keeping watch over their flocks at night. They were generally poor, and it was a 3K work (Hard, Dirty, Dangerous: Japanese w!ords starting with K). They were treated as the lowest class.!
On the other hand, the wise men from the east were gentile. They were probably respected in their society they belonged, and they were thought to be rich as their gifts to Jesus were expensive gifts. They gave gold. Gold is the most frequently mentioned metal in the bible. At that time it was produced only in a small quantity and Offal, Sheba, and Arabia were the place for produce. Gold was the symbol of wealth and honour, and it was used in the expression of the eternal treasure, and shows the glory of the king. From the time of Abraham, the leaders of tribes were keeping gold, and it was used abundantly for the building of temple and Solomon’s palace.!
They also offered frankincense. Frankincense is from a trees of the genus Boswellia in the family Burseraceae, and when you scratch the branch, white resin comes out. It was named after its shape. There are many kinds: it was the holy thing only the king was allowed to use in the ancient Egypt. This Egyptian custom was introduced to Israel at the time of exodus and it has become b!eing used as a fragrant offering to God. !
They offered myrrh. ‘Myrrh is harvested from the tree resin of the family of Commiphora. In ancient Egypt, it was essential for embalming. Frankincense was excluded when embalming.’ Take for yourself the finest spices: 12⁄2 pounds of liquid myrrh, half as much (6⁄4 pounds) of fragrant cinnamon, 6⁄4 pounds of fragrant cane, 12⁄2 pounds of cassia (by the sanctuary shekel), and one gallon of olive oil. Prepare from these a holy anointing oil, a scented blend, the work of a perfumer; it will be holy anointing oil (Exod 30:23–25 HCSB)”. Myrrh possess strong antiseptic and fragrant property. It was mixed with other fragrances into olive oil or animal fat to make fragrant skin ointment or cosmetics and for priest and ladies from the time of ancient Egypt and thorough Solomon’s era. It was also applied to dead body. !

Wise men from the east was able to prepare these gifts, and were led by the star from far away. As a representative of the gentiles, they acknowledged baby Jesus as the king and holy one, the one who will die for our sake, thus showing their faith.!
The Lord offers precious salvation to all whom he wants to save, the poorest to the rich, even to us.!
!II Common experience: They met the saviour and worshipped him

1 The shepherds heard the news of the birth of Jesus Christ from an angel before anyone else. We can see how they were led from their conversation with Mary. They heard about the meaning of a saviour. We can say that they were the people who were the closest to where the Lord Jesus Christ was born. Without any preparation, they hurried off to see him upon receiving the message. They represent those people who can believe immediately upon hearing the message. Their first testimony: the birth of a saviour was told by the angels. This situation is recorded in verses 8-9. When they were keeping watch over their flocks at night in the field of Bethlehem, suddenly the glory of the Lord shone around them and an angel of the Lord appeared. It was such a shock. They were terrified. The angel had brought a message (verse 10-12). It was the message of great joy for all the people. In the town of David, a saviour has been born. He is a prince of peace. This is the Christ (Messiah) the Lord. He is the great joy from God to all people without exception. It is not the temporally joy that humans try to create, but is the eternal joy from God. It is the joy its foundation is found in the saviour Jesus. !

Their second testimony is that the baby who was born is a saviour. The sign for the evidence is that ‘they will find a baby wrapped in clothes and lying in a manger’. In the matter of fact they have met ‘a baby wrapped in clothes and lying in a manger’. !

The third testimony is that after the angel delivered the message, a great company of the heavenly host appeared and praised God. They said, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favour rests.” When you speak a message of joy, joyful praises fill the heart naturally. When God gave you joy, praises would have come naturally out of your lips. The angels who serve God in heaven knew the purpose of saviour’s birth on earth. So they would have longed for this event to happen. That has finally taken place. Glory to God. When its purpose finally took place, they sang praises wishing “peace on earth to people on whom his favour rests”. The angels knew the birth of the prince of peace.!
It was already known through the prophet Isaiah 740 years before Jesus was born. “For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on His shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace (Isa 9:6 HCSB).”!

Messiah will reign on the throne of David. Then the prince of peace will bring about safety. The Lord is the greatest shepherd. He will keep his sheep in safety, and not allow his sheep to be harmed or being destroyed by the enemies or hurting each others. The people are saved from the evil, and released from the fear of evil. ‘It is because the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the seas.’ Verse 9 The earth is filled with the joy of awe of the Lord, with trust in his judgement and his rule and with praises. To those who believe in the Lord will be given peace.!

2 Wise men who were the gentiles were led by the star and arrived at the child.!

Wise men were not notified by the song of the angels but by using their culture, education, astronomy, interest and profession. For the shepherds who understand the poems well, God used their sense to inform them. For the wise men who are always busy with their research, God used the star. It is quite rational things to do. Wise men lived far away so it took them a long time before they saw Jesus. However, they prepared well and went on a long trip, and finally saw the Lord Jesus Christ and worshipped him. !
They understood that a new king was born, so they gave the prepared gold. They also offer frankincense which only the king could use. The fact myrrh was offered to baby Jesus indicates his death and burial. It shows the eternal king who is holy and without any sin would experience death which is the result of sin and be buried. The one without sin becomes a substitute for our sins to accomplish the atonement on the cross. Doing so, he fulfils the role of Messiah. This was indicated by their gifts. We can see that Wise men researched the book of prophets. Because they say that his birth place is in Bethlehem by the prophecy of Micah.!

III Then how will we be led? Like the shepherd? Like Wise men? Either ways the important thing is to meet the saviour Jesus Christ and worship him. This is the true Christmas.!

We heard about the loud praise of the angels to celebrate the birth of Messiah, and the joy of the shepherds and their testimony. On top of it, we have the hope of the second coming of the Lord, the prince of peace. Remembering in our hearts that we are given the peace with God from the prince of peace, let us walk towards 2015, keep praying for the completion of the salvation to the end. !
