Message

“The Mechanism of Addiction”

Romans 7:14-25

Message 1:

Addiction is a heavy, sensitive topic, but why have we decided to talk about it in this limited time? There are three reasons.

First, more people are trapped in addiction than we realize. Addiction takes many forms, and almost everyone has some kind of addiction. The data makes this reality clear. According to statistics, 64% of adults (both men and women) view pornography at least once a week. One statistic claims that pornography sites get more traffic than Netflix, Amazon, and X (formerly Twitter) combined. This is shocking enough, but surprisingly, even in the church, 57% of pastors have struggled with pornography or are in the midst of that battle right now. I was introduced to pornography in middle school and struggled with this addiction until my senior year of high school. Therefore, I know firsthand just how powerful pornography is. This statistic is just one example of pornography addiction. If we look at substance addictions like alcohol and drugs, as well as gambling, overeating, shopping, gaming, or work, we could say that everyone in the church has faced some form of addictive behavior.

The second reason we are considering this issue is that even without clinical “addiction,” we are people who fill the deep hunger and thirst in our hearts with substitutes other than God and the gospel. Addiction is a state where that substitute becomes the center of our lives. Therefore, it is important for us to understand our own tendencies and what we are prone to become addicted to.

The third reason is to know that as Christians, there is hope for overcoming addiction. Addiction is a dark reality, but God guides us from that darkness into the light through the power of the gospel. Just as Paul, struggling with sin, praised God in Romans 7:25 saying, “Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!”, we too have that same hope filled with gratitude. So, over these two days, I want us to think together about the mechanism of addiction, how the gospel addresses it, and what we can do now.

  1. Misunderstandings about Addiction

To understand what addiction is, we must first consider what it is not. In short, I want to clear up the misunderstandings.

Not just genetics or brain mechanisms: Of course, brain mechanisms and genetics are deeply involved. However, the root causes of addiction do not solely stem from just the brain or genetics. If it were purely a genetic or brain issue, modern medicine should be able to cure it completely. But what is the reality? According to one statistic, regardless of discharge methods, patient characteristics, or the addictive substance, 50 to 60% of people relapse within six months of completing treatment. On the other hand, there is a very interesting fact. Many American soldiers who served in the Vietnam War developed severe heroin addictions while there, but when they returned home to the US, most were able to naturally stop using it without even suffering severe withdrawal symptoms. These examples show that neuroscience alone cannot fundamentally solve the problem of addiction.

Not simply willpower: At the same time, addiction is not a problem that can be solved simply by “willpower.” It is not something you can cure just by telling yourself strongly to “stop” and making an effort. Effort to overcome addiction is necessary. But if you make efforts without understanding the root of the addiction, you are highly likely to return to your addictive substance.

Not a lack of self-control (intemperance): Finally, addiction is not simply “a lack of self-control.” What is a lack of self-control? It is returning to the object of addiction repeatedly because you absolutely love it. But in addiction, you don’t return to it because you love it.

You can see this by listening to the testimony of someone who experienced alcoholism:”Even though I still felt terrible from the alcohol the night before, I knew I was going to open another 2-liter bottle. And at the same time, I clearly knew that I didn’t want to drink anymore. Sitting on the couch, I realized: the old excuse of ‘I can stop anytime I want, I just don’t want to’ was no longer valid. Because I really did not want to drink alcohol. Yet I watched myself get up from the couch and pour myself a drink, as if watching a stranger.”

People struggling with addiction end up doing it even when they don’t want to. It is extremely important to understand this. Because people with addictions are not strange people who just love something too much. There is a completely different root cause behind it.

Paul understood his own sin the same way. In Romans 7:18-19, he says:”For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.”

The important principle the Apostle Paul shows us is that as Christians, we do not commit sin simply because we enjoy rebelling against God’s law. We sometimes commit sins even when we truly desire from the bottom of our hearts not to do so. And this is exactly the true nature of addictive behavior.

  1. What is Addiction?

If addiction is not merely a genetic/brain issue, a willpower issue, or an intemperance issue, then what is it?Definition: Addiction occurs when sin preys on our healthy, good inner desires, causing bad habits, and bringing about a vicious cycle of shame, guilt, and ruin as a result.

Originally, God placed various good hopes and desires in our human hearts. They are important cravings designed to be perfectly satisfied only by God Himself. The innate desires God gave us—to be loved and accepted, to know life’s purpose and meaning, peace and security, intimate connection and a place to belong, to experience joy and beauty, and to worship—these cravings remain deeply within every human heart.

Of course, these cravings were not made to be perfectly satisfied in this world. However, through our environment and relationships, we are allowed to experience a foretaste of that fulfillment. Ecclesiastes 8:15 says:”So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.”

To maintain our mental health, it is essential to taste this fulfillment and joy in advance. That is why humans seek fulfillment through their environments and relationships. And all of this is meant to guide us to God Himself, the source of all good things and the ultimate Good.

However, often these basic cravings in our hearts go unmet. Because we live in a world stained by sin. We are deeply reminded of this through all of life’s experiences and events. Trauma, abuse, our upbringing, difficult relationships, our own sins and guilt—through these, our soul’s cravings are not satisfied, and as a result, we harbor various emotions like frustration, a sense of loss, escapism, emptiness, inappropriate lusts, anger, anxiety, fear, and loneliness.

In the gap of feeling unsatisfied lies the terrifying trap of sin. Sin preys on healthy human desires and the emotions that arise when they go unmet, offering a false promise: “I (sin) can become the center of your fulfillment.” Sin cleverly whispers that it can provide what we seek in the depths of our souls. It temporarily fulfills it through specific actions (sexual desire, gambling, work, shopping) or substances (alcohol, drugs) that bring instant pleasure, but the heart is never fully satisfied. So, having yielded to the temptation of sin, we are not only tormented by guilt but again taste unfulfilled emptiness.

Where do you think a person harboring this guilt and dissatisfaction returns? They return to the actions or substances that provided even a little fulfillment. Sin immediately returns and whispers: “Just use this.” “If you look at this, or do this, you can fill that dissatisfaction again. I’m always on your side.”

Thus, sin creates evil-stained habits within us, locking humans into the cycle of addiction. Sin preys on the deep cravings of our hearts that we desperately desire, like love, approval, and security, making false promises but never truly delivering. And ultimately, that sin (the object of addiction) becomes the idol we bow down to.

Looking at the testimonies of people who have actually experienced addiction makes the mechanism clear:

“At 16, the first sip of alcohol I ever had changed my entire life. Bourbon I snuck out of the liquor cabinet at a sleepover. With that first sip burning my throat, all the fear, social awkwardness, and the difficulty of living that was inside me was blown away in an instant. I got dead drunk, blacked out, threw up everywhere, dry heaved, and suffered a deathly hangover the next day. Even so, I knew with absolute certainty I was going to do it again. For the first time in my life, I truly felt I could belong as a member of the group without having to play the perfect self to gain someone’s approval.”

“I was hooked on heroin from the start, but many people who later became addicted say, ‘I threw up the first time, the second time, and perhaps every time I got high.’ Would you order a dish again if you threw it up the first time you ate it? Would you go out of your way on a cold night to a dangerous street corner to buy it? The biggest and darkest secret about heroin is that heroin itself is actually not that great. Rather than figuring out what truly valuable things we are seeking, it’s easier to pursue the drug as if it were wonderful, so we simply agree to do so. Heroin is nothing but a substitute, a filler, and a mask to fill what we believe we are lacking.”

“I struggled with a pornography addiction. I had a deep wound of feeling rejected by my friends and unloved by anyone. Even though I was a Christian and truly desired to ‘walk in a way that brings glory to God,’ I couldn’t find the way to do so by my own strength. Because of the deep loneliness I felt, I spent my nights crying myself to sleep.”

After hearing these three testimonies, you can see a commonality. There is an initial dissatisfaction, an attempt to fill it with something, and even if they don’t like the action or substance, they ultimately return to it, create a bad habit, and fall into the vicious cycle of addiction. This is exactly the definition and mechanism of addiction.

Hearing this, some of you might think: “If I just understand the mechanism of addiction, I should be able to avoid it.” But knowing the mechanism doesn’t mean you can easily escape it. Because addiction has a very powerful weapon to ensure we cannot break out of that vicious cycle. That weapon is “Shame.”

Shame binds us to the very problem we are suffering from. It makes us fear others’ judgments, preventing us from confessing to anyone, and creates a terror of admitting that conflicts exist within us. Furthermore, fearing the destructive impact our addiction might have on our loved ones paralyzes us completely. All of these are traps set by shame and are the greatest tools of sin used to keep us locked in the vicious cycle. And if this vicious cycle goes unbroken and prolonged, our daily lives, relationships, and spiritual and mental health will collapse.

Paul, reflecting on the mechanism of sin within himself in Romans 7:13, says:”Did that which is good (God’s law), then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good to bring about my death, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.”

We also have good things. They are the various desires in our hearts that can only be perfectly satisfied by God. However, sin preys on those “good things,” running wild beyond our imagination, exposing its sinfulness. This is exactly the terrifying mechanism of sin behind addiction.

  1. Three Truths

Having discussed the dark reality of addiction up to this point, there are a few truths we can remember from here.

First: People suffering from addiction are perfectly normal people.

They are the very people earnestly pursuing the deep cravings of the soul given by God. In fact, they take those desires straight to heart and earnestly seek fulfillment as they originally should. It’s just that they mistook the place (the object) to seek that fulfillment. We all live carrying different cravings in our hearts. Some seek approval from others particularly strongly, while others seek love, intimate relationships, safety, or a place to belong.

Whether you are currently struggling with addiction yourself or someone close to you engages in such behaviors, we can all empathize with the problem of addiction. Because at its root is exactly the same thing we have.

One addiction expert says:”We are neither taught nor do we usually think that people with addictions are actively and passionately pursuing a ‘better, richer life.’ Rather, we tend to view them as ‘people who dropped out of the game of life’ or ‘people willingly heading for ruin.’ But the reality is not that at all. I argue this: addictive behavior, more clearly than any other human behavior, tells us what humans most deeply crave in the depths of their souls.”

It all starts with the unmet cravings of the human heart, and sin uses them to bring ruin to life. We, too, tend to escape to our own idols trying to meet our needs. That is exactly why we can empathize and stand by those troubled by addictive behaviors. The thirst, weakness, and tendencies in the hearts of those around us are not someone else’s problem, but a reflection of ourselves.

Second: Our addictions show us what cravings we hold in our hearts.

When we are able to deeply reflect, meditate, and talk about our addictions, our addictions show us what cravings we hold in our hearts. Our addictions are complex, shaped by personality, past experiences, and relationships. Yet, within the details of that addiction lies a roadmap to the soul’s cravings given by God. The more deeply we explore our addictive behaviors, and the more we can talk about the details of our addictions, the more clearly we can see how God made us and how we can be satisfied.

But the opposite is also true. If we ignore our addictions and do not expose them to the light, we become increasingly confused about ourselves and how God made us.

Therefore, we must face our addictive behaviors head-on without looking away, reflecting on how they point to our true desires. God wants us to understand our own cravings. God already knows all of them and still loves us. God never approaches our state of being trapped in addiction with irritation or condemnation. God wants us to know and experience the true fulfillment that is in Him alone.

Third: God deeply delights in you.

No matter how terrifying the evil working in your addiction is, God deeply delights in you. When you constantly fight addiction and continue to lose to sin every day, you tend to lose sight of who you are and your assurance as a child of God. Because of the evil and filth writhing in your heart, you might feel, “Doesn’t God look down on me as a second-class citizen of the Kingdom, a shameful existence?”

Just as Paul cried out in Romans 7:24:”What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?”

We sometimes feel the exact same sharp pain. But brothers and sisters, Jesus Christ is your salvation. The Lord is the one who forgives abundantly. No matter how many times you fall into the cycle of shame and despair because of sin, there is grace that covers all your sins. That is exactly why Paul declared in the following verse 25:”Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!”

Even in the midst of the struggle with addiction and sin, Christ continues to stand as the Savior who fulfills all our needs. The Lord died for us, and no matter how terrifying our sins may be, He covered them all on the cross. Here we can find immense comfort. And because of the cross of Christ, we can be confident that God deeply delights in us, not merely as slaves, but as His beloved children.

And because Jesus resurrected, we are given resurrection power to overcome the evil of addiction brought by sin. We are not left defenseless against the power of evil. When we face addiction, we can have the certain hope of the gospel.

Summary of Message 1:

Addiction uses our good desires to create bad habits, ultimately leading to a vicious cycle of shame and ruin.

We who struggle with addiction are simply humans with various heart cravings that can only be perfectly satisfied by God.

Despite all our idolatry, sin, and addictions, Christ is a perfect Savior who saves miserable people like us.

Therefore, let us trust the Lord, surrender everything to Him, and return to Him. Let’s pray.
