Big Idea:

Sermon Title: Struggling and Suffering for Maturity

Introduction: Struggling and Suffering for What?

Becoming a professional sumo wrestler.

Requires you to adhere to some very strict and painful goals.

You live in these communal sumo training stables where every aspect of your is dictated by a very strict tradition.

The day starts for the young sumo at 5am every morning.

You start cooking breakfast, clean the stables, and then prepare the bath for the older sumos.

A typical lunch consists of a stew of meat, fish and vegetables, eaten with rice and washed down with beer.

You then rest after lunch – to put on weight.

In between your jobs and putting on lots of weight, you have your training which involves clashing with other men’s fat sweaty bodies on a dirt floor.

This happens for a number of years before you are ready to enter the ring and fight.

And the sport has a very high drop out rate.

But for those who stick at the strict and painful routine, and if you make it to the top of your sport, you could end up making around $50,000 a month.

The bad news is – sumos don’t live very long.

The life expectancy of a sumo is between 60 and 65 years of age.

After setting yourself some very strict and very painful goals and achieving them – you really gotta wonder if it’s all really worth it.

What goals do you have in life that are worth suffering and struggling for?

This evening the Apostle Paul gives us some goals worth struggling for.

Goals that won’t end when you turn 65, but goals that have eternal value.

This morning we’ll see that the goal of Paul’s struggle is that Christ may be presented to everyone, and everyone presented mature in Christ.

So open your Bibles to Colossians chapter 1, and see how Paul was prepared to give his everything for the ministry of the Gospel.

1. Paul’s Struggle and Suffering

Have a read of verse 24 – Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church,”

Now at first glance what Paul says here seems a bit odd.

Who in their right mind would ever rejoice in their sufferings?

Well Paul’s not saying I like to get beaten up and I love sitting in prison.

Suffering is simply a part of being a disciple of Jesus.

We find joy in our suffering from the perspective and the purpose that Christ gives suffering.

You see Paul’s suffering because he’s preaching the gospel.

And knowing that people now know about Jesus, because of His preaching – that’s what makes his suffering worthwhile and joyful.

You know it’s really interesting Paul doesn’t celebrate his wonderful successes or the miraculous gifts that God’s given him, but he rejoices in his suffering.

You know the Bible’s perspective on suffering is truly unique.

Jesus pronounced a blessing on those who are persecuted for righteousness sake.

When the Apostles were beaten up in Jail in Acts chapter 5, they left rejoicing – being counted worthy to suffer for Jesus.

Paul said in the letter to the Romans that “suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.”

But when we fail to look beyond our suffering to the greater spiritual goals that it achieves, we’ll become bitter and resentful, and God will seem cruel and life will be meaningless.

But when we take the “long view” – and see our suffering in the light of its eternal consequences and in the light of the Gospel – our suffering will be a great source of joy and comfort and spiritual growth.

And you’ll also notice Paul not only suffers for the Gospel, but he struggles for the gospel as well.

Go to verse 29 – 29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me. For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face,”

You see here Paul is giving everything for the sake of Christ and the Gospel.

Gospel ministry is really hard work – It’s exhausting – Wearying.

I reckon when it comes to the Gospel and ministry, we want to quit when the times get tough.

Don’t we?

It’s so much easier to just give up.

The frustration – the discouragement!

So how does Paul keep going when he’s struggling and suffering for Christ?

2. What Kept Paul Going as he Struggled and Suffered?

Well there are two things that keep Paul going.

Go back to verse 29, let’s read it again: “For this I toil, struggling with all His energy that He powerfully works within me.”

So how does Paul keep going?

Well it’s got nothing to do with education, or personality, or physical fitness, but God’s power working in him.

Paul relies on power which comes from God.

Do you want to keep going in your Christian walk and not give up?

Then as God’s people, we need to draw deeply on the infinite and unending power of God.

It’s that power we need.

Now we know that God’s power doesn’t mean we’re not gonna get physically and emotionally exhausted.

But it will keep us going in Gospel ministry.

It will keep you going when that person you’re sharing the Gospel with just won’t believe.

It will keep you going in your struggle with sin.

It will keep you going when you’re facing peer pressure.

It will keep you going when you’re feel spiritually depressed.

It will keep you going when you’ve been on your knees praying for a wayward son or daughter.

It will keep you going when you’re feeling down.

It will keep you going for Jesus.

But it’s just not Christ’s power that keeps Paul going, it’s the hope of glory as well – have a read of Verse 27.

“To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

Everyone – we have something that the rest of this world doesn’t have – and that’s hope!

We have hope because we are confident that “the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” (Romans 8:18)

We have hope because I am confident that when Christ who is in my life appears, “I will also appear with him in glory.”

You see this life – with its pain and disappointment and ugliness will one day give way to an incredible and eternal glory.

That’s our hope – that’s what keeps us going.

And we know that for certain because as it says in verse 27, God chose to make known to us “the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

This isn’t some maybe hope – but a real and certain hope!

It’s ours because the Christ who died and rose again lives in us now and forever.

And so when we die we will go to be with Him forever.

That’s what keeps Paul going and that’s what should keep us going as we struggle and suffer for the sake of the Gospel.

3. The Purpose of Paul’s Struggle and Suffering

At the same time there’s a purpose in our struggles and suffering.

I summarised it earlier – to present Christ to everyone and to present everyone mature in Christ.

a. To Present Christ to Everyoneすべての人にキリストを伝える

Go to verse 25 and you’ll see the first part of Paul’s purpose– to present Christ to everyone

Have a read:

“… to make the word of God fully known, the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints.”

But Paul doesn’t just want converts – he wants disciples!

b. To Present Everyone Mature in Christキリストにあって成人として立たせる

Go to verse 28 and you’ll see the second part of his purpose there – to present everyone mature in Christ.

“Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.”

And what Paul does now is show us what that maturity looks like.

First of all – maturity is about the ability to get on with others.

Have a look at verse 2:

“… that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love …”

Remember what Jesus said.

“BY this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35)

Christ’s love is the glue that binds us together as God’s people.

Paul goes on to say that maturity is about completeness in Christ.

Verse 3 – Maturity is about recognising that in Christ “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

We don’t need to add to Christ.

And verse 4, maturity is seen in spiritual discernment.

“I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments.”

Discernment’s all about learning to distinguish between truth and error.

And we do that by hearing, reading and studying the Bible together.

This is the way we live and grow in wisdom and discernment.

And discernment matters because the truth of the Gospel matters.

Now in verse 5 Paul picks up one more charateristic of maturity.

Paul rejoices to see there “good order and the firmness of their faith in Christ.”

Good order means good behaviour.

They were living their lives in obedience to the will of God.

And they were standing firm on the Gospel of Christ.

Persevering under pressure and not budging from the truth of the Gospel.

They were sticking close to Christ, in whom they were complete.

Now question is, are Paul’s priorities our priorities?

Like Paul is our priority to present Christ to everyone and to present everyone mature in Christ?

Struggle and suffer for that purpose.

Conclusion: What are you struggling and suffering for?

I wanna finish by telling you about a guy called William Tyndale.

Someone – whom like Paul – struggled and suffered for the gos[pel.

Tyndale was the first person to translate the Bible into English.

But in 1536 Tyndale was condemned as a heretic by the Catholic

Church for translating the Bible into English.

He was tied to a stake, strangled and then burnt.

Tyndale died at 42 years of age.

A great man of God, with a great goal

A man who struggled & suffered to see the Bible translated into English.

And it cost him his life.

What goals do you have in Life?

What are we suffering for?

What are we struggling for?

Paul gives us some goals here in this passage that are really worth struggling and suffering and labouring for.

To present Christ to everyone and to present everyone mature in Christ.

Making followers of Jesus.

Isn’t that a pretty good goal of have in life?

It’s the one goal – the Bible says – we should all have.

Is it your goal?

Here’s the challenge: I want you all to start praying for one person who you want to become a Christian.

Make that your goal for the next twelve months.

Bring one new person into the Kingdom of God.

And if we do that – this church will double in the next 12 months.

You thought you have space problems now Hirohashi Sensei – what if this happens!

But that’s the minimum really.

Go for 2 – 3 – 4 people – I really don’t care, but the minimum’s one.

Struggle – suffer for that goal.

So that this church will be bursting even more at the seams in 2016.

Start praying.

Start reaching out.

So that we might present Christ to everyone

and present everyone mature in Christ.
